What is sport and performance psychology?
Sport and performance psychology looks at how attention, confidence, emotion, behavior, preparation, and pressure influence performance. Tim's work combines advanced education and professional training in sport and performance psychology with firsthand experience competing at a high level.
What is mental performance training?
Mental performance training is practical mental skills development for training and competition. Sessions can focus on confidence, pressure, focus, routines, self-talk, motivation, consistency, goal setting, and responding effectively to mistakes or setbacks.
How is this different from therapy?
Mental performance training is focused on helping athletes build practical skills for sport and performance, such as confidence, focus, routines, self-talk, and managing pressure. It is not a substitute for therapy or mental health treatment. If an athlete's needs fall outside the scope of mental performance work, Tim will help the athlete or family think through appropriate next steps.
Does an athlete need to be struggling to benefit?
No. Athletes can work on the mental side when they are struggling, when they are performing well, or when they simply want more reliable tools for competition. The goal is to build skills that can be practiced and used over time.
What ages do you work with?
Tim works with athletes of all ages and competitive levels, from youth and high school athletes to collegiate, adult, professional, and Olympic-level performers.
What sports do you work with?
Tim works with athletes across many sports, including track and field, cross country, soccer, basketball, golf, and other performance settings where confidence, focus, and pressure matter.
Do you work with athletes virtually?
Yes. The Services page says sessions are available virtually, by phone, or in person in San Luis Obispo, CA.
Do you work with athletes outside San Luis Obispo?
Yes. Because sessions can happen virtually or by phone, athletes do not need to be located in San Luis Obispo to contact Tim.
What happens during the first session?
The first session is a chance to understand the athlete, their sport, goals, competitive environment, and the situations where performance tends to break down. From there, Tim helps identify practical mental skills to begin working on, such as confidence, focus, routines, pressure management, self-talk, or responding to mistakes.
Do parents participate?
For younger athletes, parents are typically involved at the beginning so Tim can understand the athlete's background, goals, and current challenges. As the work continues, the athlete needs space to speak openly and take ownership of the process. Parent involvement can be discussed directly with Tim based on the athlete's age and situation.
How many sessions do athletes usually have?
The number of sessions varies depending on the athlete's goals, needs, and schedule. Some athletes use a short block of sessions to work on a specific issue, while others benefit from ongoing support across a season. Tim will discuss the best fit during the initial consultation.
Can you work with my athlete's coach?
When appropriate, Tim can communicate with an athlete's coach or support staff so everyone is using a shared language around the mental side of performance. For individual athletes, coach involvement is discussed with the athlete and family first.
Do you work with teams?
Yes. Tim works with teams, groups, and coaches to build a shared language around confidence, focus, pressure, routines, and the mental side of performance.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is discussed directly with Tim after he understands the athlete's needs and the type of support being requested. This helps make sure the next step is a good fit before any payment is arranged.
How do we get started?
Start by scheduling a consultation or sending a short inquiry. Tim will follow up personally to discuss fit, timing, and next steps before any payment is arranged.
